Aligarh: The prestigious Lambert Academic Publishing, Germany has published an important medical research book authored by Dr. Diwan Israr Khan. The book titled “Ambiguous Genitalia: An Approach” has been co-authored by Dr. Farzana K. Beig and Prof. S. Manazir Ali of Department of Pediatrics, J. N. medical College, Aligarh Muslim University.
Dr. Diwan Israr Khan said that the term Ambiguous Genitalia applies to any infant with a confusing appearance of the external genitalia. This includes any infant with a phallus and bilaterally non-palpable testes and unilateral cryptorchidism and hypospadias, penoscrotal or perineoscrotal hypospadias with or without microphallus even if testes are descended. He said that the syndrome may appear with overt or covert genital ambiguity.
Dr. Khan said that a conservative estimate shows that 1 in 2000 children born will be affected by an intersex condition. 98% of affected babies are due to congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
