Aligarh: Professor S. Moied Ahmed, ICU Incharge, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, along with his team members, Dr Abu Nadeem, Dr Obaid Siddiqui, Asst. Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology, Dr Kamil Ashraf, Asst Professor, Department of Medicine and Dr Asad Mahmood, Emergency Medical Officer, conducted one-day workshop on “Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Analysis in Acute Care”, at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi.
In the inaugural speech, Professor MC Misra, Chief of Apex Trauma Centre AIIMS & Organizing Chairman of the workshop, mentioned that though ABG analysis is one of the essential investigations in the management of critically ill patients, such workshops are rarely organized to discuss the aspects of this analysis. He thanked Prof. Moied and his team for accepting the challenge to conduct the workshop for the first time in AIIMS Trauma Centre. Prof. Misra assured that the workshop will be a regular event so that the doctors, nurses, and technicians get confidence and develop expertise in interpreting ABG.
Prof.S Moied Ahmed, the Coordinator of the workshop, said that with the advancement in patient management ABG has become an integral component of the existing battery of investigations in acute care setting. Primarily, it projects the partial pressure of oxygen, and carbon dioxide and the acid-base status of blood. Thereby, it helps to understand the underlying pathology of the disease process and initiates management accordingly. The resident doctors lack deep knowledge of the subject as it is not being taught in an elaborate manner in the undergraduate and post graduate courses. He said that the ABG interpretation is a very pertinent topic for a workshop not only for the doctors but also for the Nursing staff and technicians, who are responsible for immediate care in the Emergency, ICU and Operating Room.
The workshop comprised of pre-workshop and post-workshop evaluation of the delegates, didactic lectures and work-stations. Prof. Moied expressed sincere thanks to Prof. S. Haleem, Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiology, JNMC, senior teachers of the department and his team members for working cohesively to reach their mission.
