Almost a year after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released for PS5, development on the final chapter of the remake trilogy has taken another big step forward. Series producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the story scenario for the third game was completed by the end of 2024 and that he’s “very satisfied with it.”

Speaking to Famitsu (via Eurogamer), Kitase and game director Naoki Hamaguchi added that development on the third game began right after Rebirth was completed and that there have been no delays yet on its progress.

Kitase also mentioned that creative director Tetsuya Nomura was tasked with making certain that the game’s conclusion will be respectful to the original Final Fantasy 7 while also giving the series a satisfying conclusion.

“I’m very satisfied with it, so I’m sure the fans will be satisfied with the final chapter,” Kitase said.

The next Final Fantasy Remake chapter likely won’t be a timed Playstation exclusive either, as Kitase was quizzed about the game possibly being locked to PlayStation 6. “For those who have played FF7 Remake on PS4 and FF7 Rebirth on PS5, I think there may be some concern that the third work will be for the next-generation console,” Kitase said to 4Gamer (via VGC). “No, you can rest assured about the next one.”

This ties into Square Enix’s new multiplatform strategy, as the company revealed a new strategy last year to help it secure long-term growth. Rebirth and 2023’s Final Fantasy 16 failed to meet sales expectations for the company–although sales figures haven’t been revealed yet–but Rebirth was the 17th best-selling game in the US for 2024 and it launches today for PC.
